The “Second Summit” metaphor is a conceptual and reflective framework inspired by David Brooks’s distinction between the first “mountain”(oriented toward personal success, performance, status, and recognition) and the second “mountain” (oriented toward meaning, vocation, contribution, and a deeper form of fulfillment.) It is used here to facilitate conversations about leaders’ transformation, authentic power, and organizational impact, which are central themes of the approach presented on this website.
This metaphor does not constitute a psychological or management theory validated as such, nor does it suggest that all professionals necessarily go through the same two stages. Its elements are, however, connected to concepts supported by academic literature (including intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, autonomous motivation, meaningful work, purpose, authentic leadership, and autonomy-supportive leadership) and research shows that autonomy, meaningful work, high-quality relationships, and connecting professional activity to values and significant contributions are associated with greater engagement, well-being, satisfaction, and improved organizational outcomes.
